This is Ascension by David Herring. David Herring is currently the band director at Shepton High School in Plano, Texas, and is also a great composer of both marching band and concert band. He also has a great sightreading method book which he is currently starting his 3rd edition. I first had the opportunity to work with David at Columbia High School in 2012 with his Sleepy Hollow show and I have done shows that he has written for Winona, Pasadena, Danbury, and Shepton. This was the music Shepton marched to this year.
The story behind this show is a long one to which I will not get to deep into. It is a group of people gaining special powers (the most general way to put it). The movements of the show are entitled The Arrival of Crucible, Silver Stampede, The Balance of Vision, The Quantum Paradox, and As One. There was great detail in the story of this show and I wanted to write a show for fun to it.
The band has 72 winds, 11 battery percussion, and 18 colorguard. This was the first time I tried a show with props that could be “walked” on top of and so you see a 15 by 15 stage in the front and a yellow moveable stage in the back.
