The 2nd Just for Fun show for 2025 is entitled Full Circle. It features two Latin themed pieces that can be interpreted as a circle. The opener is Corona by Jay Bocook which is the round gaseous ring around the sun which you see during a eclipse. The next two movements come from Casals Suite by Larry Kerchner which intrepets the life of cellest and conductor Pablo Casals including the number of measures in the suite which is 97, the same number of years of his life.
These are older tunes. Corona was in the Plano East band folder in 1987. Casals Suite was from before that and was the closer during my student teaching at Vines High School in 1993. Full circle indeed!
The drill, which features a lot of circles, something I don’t normally do, is written for 56 winds, 6 battery percussion, and 16 colorguard. It has 47 sets.
