So, long post alert!
We have come back from Austin for a quick visit to see the kid. She was having computer issues and we bit the bullet and got her another one. This was the first time we had the chance to see her since school started and it was a good visit to Best Buy and lunch (by the way, P Terry’s makes a good burger). She will be taking her first roadtrip with the Longhorn Band to Columbia, Missouri this weekend and coming home the next. We are going to Austin for Thanksgiving as she has a game against Texas A&M the next day in College Station.
Some scores from the weekend. First from Florida:
Bradford High School, Strake, FL
Superior Rating – FBA District 4
Show – The Gladiator by Jason Nitsch
Number of Times: 3
A couple of others from out of state:
Carbon HS (UT) – 1st in Class, Davis Cup Invititational
Desert Sunrise HS (AZ) – 5th in Division, Arizona Regional Band Championships
And finally, some results from the Area Contests in Texas:
Floydada HS – 16th Place, Area A 2A
Brackett HS – 11th Place, Area E 2A
Stafford HS – 8th Place, Area D 4A
Sealy HS – 27th Place, Area D 4A
Hitchcock HS – 31st Place, Area D 4A
Bellaire HS – 25th Place, Area I 6A
Good results from these groups. On Tuesday, I will be heading to San Antonio to watch Orangefield High School perform at state on Wednesday morning.
And, a final thought.
Columbia High School, where I worked for 17 years, will be making their first appearance at the UIL State Contest since 1983 on November 11. And I will tell you, this just makes my heart sing. I always knew that the kids had the talent there and the community would support something this wonderful. I had the chance to see them rehearse last Tuesday and thought after watching that yes, they had a really good shot at it. Congratulations to the band staff at CHS and to the towns of West Columbia and Brazoria for a remarkable run.
And, if you live in those towns, or any town that made state, if you haven’t gone to the Alamodome to watch in the past, I would encourage you to do so. You will see bands that are not just the best in the state but in the country. Texas does marching band right. And, with all the negativity that you hear about kids these days, you will see them at their very best in what they can accomplish. It is a refreshing change and it does make you think that there is hope for the future.
